Question from Molly N.:

I have smoked for 25 years and have tried to quit several times & failed. I've tried patches, Wellbutrin, gum and cold turkey; I always end up going and buying a pack of smokes anyway. What can I do? I've got to quit, it's affecting my health above all and I just can't afford it anymore. I'd appreciate any advice from someone who has successfully quit. Thanks!

Julia N. say: ….i think the big thing is just not caving in to the cravings….don't feed that little addictive voice that says "i can't do it…i HAVE to have a cigarette!"….just know that most cravings are gone within seconds…. Add wellbutrin.

Joshua U. say: Nicotine patches- target brand

William T. say: (cold turkey its in your mind)i took up running and working out this was 4 months ago..
pick your quitting time wisely…pick a time with as little stress as possible (maybe when you have a few days off from work)….and have a "plan" on how you will handle triggers….for example after eating you could maybe brush your teeth….if you're stressed you could maybe do some deep breathing…. 2Bsr wellbutrin.

Sydney O. say: I quit smoking a few years ago. I just decided to quit one day and haven't smoked ever since. All it takes is your will power. Try not to rely on any products…because it's not the products..it's your will power.

Amelia A. say: You've probably heard, as I did, you have to really want to quit, but truthfully I don't know of a single person who smokes that doesn't want to quit and it's pretty stupid to think that if they fail it's because they didn't really want to succeed. You’re told to think of reasons to quit such as health and money, problem with thinking of health risks is we always think of the exceptions such as my grandmother who smoked forever and just passed away this July, at 102, and money is a poor reason because when you're out of smokes and trying to quit you'd pay ten dollars for just one more cigarette. I can tell you what worked for me… determination. I found myself in a situation where I had to quit no matter what it took, and it was so easy it surprised me. I quit five years ago for my daughter, not because of the bland reasons you usually hear such as wanting to see her graduate high school and go to her wedding in umpteen years from now, not that those aren't good reasons, but I never really worried about that stuff. My daughter was constantly nagging me to quit, but that never stopped me either, what got me to quit is that when my daughter was eight years old she was still sucking her thumb and she proposed a deal, I quit smoking, she quits sucking her thumb, and I agreed, we set a date about two weeks in the future. Truthfully I did it so I could smoke for the next two weeks nag-free, well those two weeks came and went and on the quit date something horrible happened, my daughter didn't quit sucking her thumb, she caught herself in the car on the way to school and was horrified because she knew I saw her and I could now smoke, I was suddenly determined to quit because I could just imagine myself dieing of a heart attack and my daughter forever blaming herself because she failed to keep her end of the deal, I became angry with cigarettes and I didn't have any desire to light up, instead of feeling that overwhelming desire from withdrawal, dancing around wishing I could have just one more cigarette, every time I felt that desire to light up, I knew it wasn’t just about myself anymore, and it just made me more mad at cigarettes and that much more determined to quit, and breaking the addiction, which had always seemed like such a huge obstacle, seemed so tiny. Anyway, that’s the point of my story; determination, you may not be able to duplicate my circumstance where you could break the heart of someone that loves you, but when you find something that ticks you off for even thinking about smoking, when its not just about you anymore, it is very easy to quit.
…and i find it helpful to chew gum (just regular gum) whenever i get an urge… Bupropion synthesis.
good luck!!

Blake N. say: i smoked for 10 years and i went to this specialist and it was like one of them things where they make you go to sleep but the only thing is you dont know anything when you wake up lol
i've found the patches to be most helpful (for me)…but i did also like the inhaler quite a bit (you might try it if you've tried everything else) Wellbutrin acne.

Jayden O. say: I don`t know if it helps but here is my story. I stopped twice for eight months and it was easy. But the next time it was like having hunger pains all the time. I found that at first I tortured myself all the time thinking I really need a cigarette I REALLY need a cigarette. Then I when I realised that I was doing this, almost masochistically, I found that I could then put it out of my thoughts for a little while, by thinking of something else or eating a mint candy ( a lot of mint candies). As the nicotine craving got less the gaps between me thinking about it got longer. Having been that hard the last time I stayed away from them for twenty years now knowing if I have just one I am hooked forever. It also helps to realise that the pleasure from ciggies is not relaxing only in subduing the craving they produce . It`s hard but you will feel great having beat the big business pushers and having all that extra cash.
